Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program - JJ/WBGSP

The JJ/WBGSP supports citizens of certain developing countries who have relevant professional experience and a history of contributing to their country’s development. The scholarship is available for candidates pursuing a master's degree in a development-related field at one of the 41 Participating Master’s Programs offered by 24 universities across the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. The focus areas include economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
Important Note: Applicants must first secure admission to one of the participating master’s programs to be eligible.
Application Windows (2025):
Window 1: January 13 – February 28, 2025 (12:00 noon EST)
Window 2: March 25 – May 23, 2025 (12:00 noon EST)
Only candidates admitted unconditionally (except for funding) to one of the participating programs and shortlisted by the university will receive the application form.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:
Be a national of a World Bank member developing country on the designated list.
Not hold dual citizenship with a developed country.
Be in good health.
Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline.
Be employed in a full-time, paid, development-related role at the time of application, with at least three years of relevant professional experience acquired within the past six years.
(Exceptions may apply for nationals from fragile and conflict-affected states.)Be admitted unconditionally to a participating master’s program outside their country of citizenship or residence by the application deadline.
Not be affiliated with the World Bank Group (staff, directors, or close relatives).
Ineligible Candidates:
Those who declined a previous JJ/WBGSP award or failed to graduate after receiving the scholarship.
Selection Process:
Eligible applications are reviewed by two assessors and scored based on:
Quality of Professional Experience (30%)
Professional Recommendations (30%)
Commitment to Home Country Development (30%)
Education Background (10%)
Finalists are selected by considering:
Geographical and gender distribution.
Hardships or unusual circumstances.
Financial need.
Scholarship Benefits:
Covered Costs:
Round-trip economy-class airfare with a $600 travel allowance per trip.
Full tuition for the graduate program.
Basic medical insurance provided through the university.
Monthly living allowance (varies by host country) covering accommodation, food, and books.
Excluded Costs:
Visa fees, family support, extracurricular activities, language training, additional travel, research expenses, or educational equipment like computers.
Post-Graduation Commitment:
Scholars are required to return to their home countries and use their acquired skills to contribute to national development.
