Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2025: Funding for International Postgraduate Students

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:
A citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
Applying to pursue one of the following courses at the University of Cambridge:
PhD (full-time or part-time*)
MLitt (full-time)
One-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions (see below).
*For October 2024 entry, Gates Cambridge continues to pilot a scheme allowing applicants to apply for funding for a part-time doctoral degree (PhD).
Current student at Cambridge?
If you are currently studying at Cambridge and wish to apply for a new postgraduate course, you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. For instance, if you are studying for an MPhil, you can apply for a PhD. Current Gates Cambridge Scholars may also apply for a second scholarship for a new degree. All current Cambridge students will be considered in the second, international round. However, if you have already started a course (e.g., partway through a PhD), you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the remainder of it.
Courses Gates Cambridge does NOT consider:
Undergraduate degrees (e.g., BA or BA affiliated).
MASt courses.
Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) and Global EMBA.
Master of Finance (MFin).
Executive Master of Accounting.
Business Doctorate (BusD).
PGCE.
MBBChir Clinical Studies.
MD Doctor of Medicine (6 years, part-time, Home students only).
Graduate Course in Medicine (A101).
Part-time degrees (other than the PhD).
Non-degree courses.
What we are looking for:
The selection for Gates Cambridge Scholars is based on four key criteria:
Academic excellence: Applicants must demonstrate evidence of academic excellence through their transcripts, references, experience, and potential for success in the chosen course.
Reasons for choice of course: You need to present a strong case for why you are choosing a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge. For PhD applicants (and most research MPhil applicants), contacting a potential supervisor to develop a research project is essential.
A commitment to improving the lives of others: Gates Cambridge Scholars are expected to have a clear commitment to improving the lives of others, demonstrated through past, current, and future actions in society.
A capacity for leadership: Applicants must show evidence of leadership skills, whether in academia, work, or community activities, and how these skills can make an impact in the future.
Applications for entry in the academic year 2025-26 open on 4 September 2024.
Application Process:
Applicants submit a combined application form for both admission and funding.
The application form includes a statement explaining why you're applying for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and how you meet the scholarship criteria.
PhD applicants must also submit a research proposal.
Applicants need two academic references, as well as a Gates Cambridge reference, specifically addressing how the applicant meets the scholarship's criteria.
