Job Purpose:
Jubilee Health Insurance Limited is seeking a Senior Underwriter for Retail & SME to join our team. This role will report to the Underwriting & Reinsurance Manager and be based at our Head Office in Nairobi. The position holder will oversee underwriting operations, ensuring profitable growth and high-quality service while managing policy setup, renewal, documentation, and addressing client and intermediary queries. The role will involve proactive business acquisition and retention by ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and controls.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategy:

• Contribute to the development and implementation of underwriting strategies, aligning them with the company’s goals.

• Identify and assess emerging risks in the insurance sector and propose strategies to mitigate them.

• Design and implement automated underwriting processes to improve efficiency, growth, and customer satisfaction.

2. Operational:

• Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, manuals, and authority matrices.

• Review and approve non-standard quotations and renewal terms for compliance.

• Ensure quality assurance of new, renewal, and additional business to meet underwriting guidelines and customer expectations.

• Issue policies and underwriting documents on time.

• Support the distribution team in acquiring new business and engaging with clients for renewals.

• Prepare underwriting reports for management insights and decision-making.

• Re-underwrite the retail book for profitable growth.

• Ensure accurate membership setup, benefit setup, and prompt debiting and dispatch of premium invoices.

• Manage policy details in ACTi sure, ensuring timely communication, document issuance, and meeting agreed TATs.

• Ensure accurate system capture of medical benefits purchased and member coverage.

3. Corporate Governance:

• Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, company policies, and regulatory requirements.

• Implement risk control measures to manage insurance policy risks effectively.

4. Leadership & Culture:

• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior underwriters.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders to deliver exceptional customer service.

Key Skills and Competencies:

• Strong analytical skills to assess complex underwriting data and make informed decisions.

• Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in applications, policies, and documents.

• Excellent communication skills to clearly convey underwriting decisions and policy terms.

• Strong decision-making abilities in evaluating risks and determining appropriate underwriting actions.

• Proficiency in financial analysis and risk evaluation.

Academic & Professional Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Actuarial Science, Finance, or a related field (Master's degree is a plus).

• Professional Insurance Qualification.

Relevant Experience:

• A minimum of four (4) years of experience in health underwriting.
