OVERVIEW

Join the dynamic team at Microsoft Research Africa, where innovation meets impact. As a Senior NLP/ML Researcher, you will shape and lead groundbreaking research in Generative AI and Machine Learning for the African context. Our mission is to build and deploy AI technologies addressing local and global challenges, advancing equitable futures in work, health, and society.

You’ll work alongside a multidisciplinary team of ethnographers, designers, engineers, and researchers, exploring cutting-edge solutions for under-resourced languages, culturally appropriate AI, and globally equitable generative AI. This is an opportunity to push academic and practical boundaries, leaving a lasting impact on AI research and applications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related domain.

• Minimum of 4 years of post-PhD work experience.

• Expertise in machine learning algorithms and modern language/vision processing methods.

• Hands-on experience with deep learning toolkits (language, vision, or multimodal models).

• Proven research record with publications in top venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, or EMNLP.

• Passion for keeping up with AI/ML advancements.

• Demonstrated ability to shape and lead research agendas.

• Strong communication skills for academic and business audiences.

Preferred:

• Expertise in Generative AI (image, language, audio, or multimodal models).

• Experience with deep learning for African languages or data-constrained tasks.

• Knowledge of data generation/augmentation for model evaluation.

• Research interest in African contexts.

• Excellent problem-solving and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct and lead cutting-edge research in Generative AI, tailored to African contexts.

• Collaborate with Microsoft researchers and stakeholders to align AI solutions with real-world needs.

• Mentor junior researchers and support their professional growth.

• Publish research findings and engage with academic and industry communities.

• Organize workshops or seminars to promote knowledge exchange.

• Strategically plan impactful and sustainable research initiatives aligned with Microsoft Research Africa’s vision.

• Partner with academic institutions and product teams to translate research into actionable solutions.
