The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, international research and policy institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal. The Mental Health Data Prize – Africa Project
The Mental Health Data Prize – Africa (MHDP-Africa) Project aims to develop solutions for anxiety, depression, and psychosis using existing data. The objective is to enhance the understanding of what works in preventing, treating, and managing mental health issues within the African context. The goal is to produce scalable outputs that support mental health research and generate data-driven insights tailored to African populations.
Consultancy Objective
APHRC is seeking a consultant to develop a conceptual framework and strategy for engaging people with lived experience (PLE) in the MHDP-Africa project. The consultant will work closely with the project team to develop guidelines for effective involvement and leverage PLE insights to enhance project impact.
Scope of Work
The consultant will:
Develop a strategy and framework for engaging PLE in the project.
Identify the mental health lived experience expertise required for assessing applications.
Prepare a training manual and facilitate workshops for PLE team members.
Support PLE team members in delivering presentations based on their unique perspectives.
Develop a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework to evaluate PLE involvement.
Prepare a whitepaper on best practices for engaging PLEs.
Conduct media interviews to highlight the impact of PLE involvement.
Engage with each prize participant to set expectations for PLE involvement.
Collaborate with researchers to increase PLE engagement in the study.
Design ways to create a peer support group or network for PLEs.
Ensure the inclusion of PLE in the project’s team diversity and composition.
Outline ethical considerations for engaging PLE in the project.
Submit bi-weekly project progress reports.
Deliverables
Strategic plan and conceptual framework.
Monitoring and evaluation framework for PLE involvement.
Training manual and cascade training for PLE team members.
Reports on PLE needs assessment and development of criteria for assessing expectations.
Support for PLE team members in final pitch events.
Timeframe
This consultancy will run from January 2025 to December 2025 (12 months).
Responsibilities of APHRC MHDP-Africa Project Team
Provide project background documents.
Assist in mobilizing key stakeholders.
Provide logistical support for project activities.
Collaborate with the consultant in developing, implementing, and evaluating the PLE engagement.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal consultant will have experience in designing, facilitating, and documenting strategic plans for engaging mental health lived experiences or community empowerment models. Relevant work experience in developing frameworks for lived experience engagement is required.
