EXTERNAL JOB VACANCIES (PROJECT POSITIONS)

Applications are invited for the following position:

INFECTION PREVENTION CONTROL/SURVEILLANCE NURSE, MAP AMR KENYA PROJECT, ADVERT REF AD/1/4/25 – 5 POSTS

BACKGROUND

The position is based in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics within the Faculty of Health Sciences under the Monitor and Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance in Kenya (MAP-AMR Kenya) project. This is a five-year CDC-funded project conducted at Kenyatta National Hospital, The Nairobi Hospital, MP Shah Hospital, Machakos Level 5 Hospital, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

LOCATION

The successful candidates will work at one of the following hospitals:

  • Kenyatta National Hospital

  • Machakos Level 5 Hospital

  • Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital

  • Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital

The nurses will report to the IPC Coordinator at their duty station and the Project Medical Officer.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  1. Conduct daily rounds in target units to identify patients with sepsis and ensure blood cultures are collected in collaboration with clinical teams.

  2. Liaise with site and project laboratory teams for proper sample transportation, documentation, and timely reporting of results.

  3. Abstract patient data onto the MAP AMR database.

  4. Follow up on patients with invasive Candida infections to determine outcomes.

  5. Ensure accurate data collection and address discrepancies with the data team.

  6. Collaborate with hospital and project clinical and IPC teams to respond to C. auris outbreaks.

  7. Support IPC activities at the assigned duty station in coordination with site and project IPC teams.

  8. Train and mentor clinical, auxiliary, housekeeping, and environmental staff on infection prevention and control of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

  9. Prepare and submit weekly updates, monthly, and quarterly reports.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  1. Must have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

  2. Possess either:

    • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing, or

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent.

  3. Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid license.

  4. Additional training in infection prevention and control is an advantage.

  5. A minimum of five (5) years of post-qualification work experience.

  6. Experience in infection prevention and control in a large hospital setting.

  7. Demonstrated computer literacy.

  8. Strong team player with excellent communication skills.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a one-year contractual appointment, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement.

The University of Nairobi, a body corporate established by an Act of Parliament Cap 210 of the Laws of Kenya is the pioneer institution of University education in Kenya and the region.
