TextThe Position
The Dean will serve as the chief academic officer and administrator of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs. The Dean is responsible for ensuring the School provides a high-quality education that equips students to be effective, ethical, and competent practitioners in their respective fields. The Dean will oversee the academic programs to ensure they meet regulatory standards and align with the University's purpose and strategic vision.
The Dean will also manage program review and ongoing assessment of academic and support services, ensure the efficient operation of the School’s academic and administrative programs, and build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. The Dean will maintain a presence in local, national, and international scholarly communities, representing the School and the University in public speaking engagements to enhance their reputations.
Job Purpose and Expectations
Enrollment and Student Retention: Oversee continued enrollment growth and retention of students.
Enhancing the School's Distinctiveness: Effectively communicate why the School should be the first choice for students pursuing degrees in Humanities and Social Sciences.
Fundraising and Revenue Development: Lead efforts to secure external funding through fundraising initiatives and outreach. Support scholarships, faculty development, and student success.
Risk Management: Manage the School's risk and keep abreast of emerging trends in administration and management.
Alumni, Civic, and University Engagement: Expand and reinforce relationships with alumni regionally, nationally, and globally.
Communication and Transparency: Foster a culture of open communication, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability within the School and University.
Budgetary Management: Manage the administrative budget, ensuring operations stay within allocated funding, while also finding additional revenue streams.
Faculty Development: Support and retain a faculty that is responsive to student needs, while encouraging scholarly activities, publications, and grant procurement.
Diversity Efforts: Continue to develop successful diversity and inclusion initiatives that enhance the student experience, academic programs, and faculty profiles.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should possess:
A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education, Counseling Psychology, Governance, Peace and Security, Mass Communication, or a related field, with at least ten years of teaching experience.
A proven record in fundraising and the ability to partner with university advancement officers to secure external gifts, grants, and funding for School programs.
Evidence of scholarly publications and professional achievement sufficient for appointment as a professor/associate professor/Senior Lecturer at Africa Nazarene University.
Experience building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, including donors, alumni, and community members.
Familiarity with national and international issues affecting humanities and social sciences in graduate education.
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within the University, the School, and the broader community.
A commitment to shared governance and working with faculty.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, with the ability to work with diverse constituencies.
A strong appreciation for scholarship, teaching, and service.
Proven strategic, ethical, and effective leadership, with a track record of innovation.
High integrity, sound judgment, and emotional intelligence as an effective communicator who can motivate and inspire faculty, staff, and students.
Knowledge of regulatory accreditation procedures, practices, and standards.
Proven ability to facilitate small and large group discussions.
Relevant professional qualifications.
Membership in a relevant professional body.
