Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF
World Agroforestry (ICRAF) is an international research organization that focuses on the role of trees in agricultural landscapes. Established in 1978 and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, ICRAF is part of the CGIAR network, alongside CIFOR, and aims to improve the well-being of rural populations by integrating trees into farming systems.
ICRAF's work addresses key challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable land use. By promoting agroforestry—the integration of trees with crops and livestock—ICRAF seeks to improve agricultural productivity, enhance environmental sustainability, and increase resilience to climate change.
Key Areas of Focus:
Agroforestry Systems: Promoting the integration of trees into agricultural landscapes to enhance food production, soil health, and biodiversity.
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Supporting farmers in adopting agroforestry practices that help mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.
Livelihoods: Strengthening the economic and social well-being of farmers by improving access to marketable products from trees and enhancing the productivity of agricultural systems.
Sustainable Land Management: Ensuring that land-use practices are sustainable, restoring degraded lands, and improving soil fertility.
ICRAF works in over 40 countries and collaborates with farmers, governments, and research institutions to develop solutions that promote sustainable agricultural development and improve food security.
Both CIFOR and ICRAF contribute significantly to the global movement toward sustainable land and forest management, with a focus on achieving positive outcomes for both people and the environment
