Purpose of the Position:
World Vision Kenya is seeking a Communications Officer to join our team on a temporary contract running until June 2025. This position will play a key role in developing, curating, and distributing high-quality content that effectively communicates the impact of our programs, particularly focusing on the IMARA and KSEED initiatives. The successful candidate will work closely with program teams and external stakeholders to tell compelling stories, engage audiences, and ensure that our work is communicated effectively across all media channels.
As a communications expert, you will be tasked with creating content that resonates with diverse audiences, from donors and partners to the general public. You will ensure that all messaging aligns with World Vision's brand guidelines and safeguarding protocols, while also being innovative and engaging in the digital landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Development for IMARA and KSEED:
Craft Compelling Narratives: Develop and curate high-quality stories that highlight the impact of World Vision’s initiatives, focusing on children and their communities. These stories should be optimized for digital platforms and tailored for marketing, fundraising, and public outreach campaigns.
Curate Timely and Relevant Content: Identify and create content that aligns with the core priorities of IMARA and KSEED programs, ensuring that it resonates with global events, awareness days, and other significant moments in the development sector.
Centralized Content Distribution: Systematically share and distribute content across recognized information management systems, ensuring accessibility and wide reach.
Uphold Organizational Protocols: Ensure that all content adheres to World Vision’s safeguarding, brand, and communication guidelines to maintain integrity and protect beneficiaries.
Audience Engagement and Feedback: Collect and analyze audience feedback to refine content strategies, ensuring continuous improvement and maximum engagement with target demographics.
Stay Updated on Content Trends: Regularly update knowledge of current trends in digital content creation, storytelling, and multimedia engagement to ensure that World Vision’s programs remain fresh and relevant.
Collaboration with Multimedia Teams:
Work closely with video, photography, and design teams to produce cohesive multimedia content that enhances the storytelling experience, ensuring that both narrative and visual elements align effectively to engage audiences.
Planning and Reporting:
Strategize with Communications Manager: Collaborate in the development and execution of communication content plans for IMARA and KSEED, ensuring that the strategies align with program goals and objectives.
Participate in Communications Business Planning: Contribute to the design of communication business plans and initiatives that drive high-value results for the program.
Media Relations:
Build Media Relationships: Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key media contacts, including international correspondents and media houses in Kenya.
Proactive Media Engagement: Pitch compelling story ideas, including press releases, and proactively seek opportunities to raise the profile of World Vision’s programs in the media.
Coordinate Media Visits: Plan, coordinate, and facilitate media visits to World Vision’s programs to enhance media engagement and position the organization as a credible voice on advocacy, humanitarian, and development issues.
Other Responsibilities:
Cross-Team Collaboration: Participate in cross-functional teams and support other partner initiatives in the spirit of integration and organizational cooperation.
Additional Duties: Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time, adapting to evolving program needs.
Knowledge and Qualifications for the Role:
Required Qualifications:
At least 4 years of experience as a writer/reporter in a media company or an international development organization focused on communications.
Experience in creating content related to Natural Resource Management (NRM), Environment and Climate Change (ECC), or other development initiatives is highly preferred.
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences.
Experience in digital content creation for platforms such as websites, blogs, and social media.
Strong knowledge of the media landscape in Kenya, including international correspondents, and experience in donor engagement.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools and digital content management platforms.
Demonstrates creativity and innovation in content creation and strategy.
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural context and collaborate with diverse teams.
Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines under pressure.
Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications:
Photo and video editing skills are desirable to enhance content creation.
Accreditation from the Media Council of Kenya is preferred.
Membership with the Public Relations Society of Kenya would be an added advantage.
Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related discipline is required.
